Clear Clutter From Your Life
Demands of modern life are constantly changing. There’s always new information, new products, and new responsibilities thrust upon us. Sometimes you just can’t keep up, and you feel as though you’re never getting anything done. Your mental state starts to feel cluttered. This is a clear sign that it’s time to take action and clear clutter, before you let it take over your life.
There are several instances in which you need to make quick decisions. These areas range from simple tasks such as checking your mail, literature-such as books, newspapers, magazines and reports. Then other items included in the quick decision making lists are personal responsibilities, requests from loved ones, and demands of your job. Only you can determine how important they are to your life.
Evaluate each item before it contributes to disorder. The first question to ask yourself with each new thing is: Does this pertain to my life? If the answer is the answer is no, then you can immediately trash it.
If you have important tasks then sometimes it’s important that you handle them. But if there’s someone who can do it for you, quicker or better, then delegate the task!
Sometimes there are tasks best done by you, so it’s important you take action. If the task is simple, taking 15 minutes or less, then do it immediately. This is the best way to get simple tasks eliminated from your life as soon as they are presented to you.
Sometimes you won’t have those 15 minutes to spare. In these cases, file the task and make sure to follow up at a later date – make a note so you plan a specific date to handle it. You can file it into a tickler file to complete the task in time.
The last decision you’ll need to make is whether you’ll need to reference the item later. If an item needs to be used at a later date, such as a tax document, you should file it away immediately to save time.
Practice using your new decision making skills today. Follow them by asking questions in the following order. Is it trash? Can it be delegated? Can I take action now? When can I follow up on it? Does it need to be filed? Watch the clutter be eliminated from your life.
