Connecting Game Consoles To The Internet

So you want to play a video game online, or maybe watch a movie online. To make this happen, you will first need to establish a connection between your game console and the Internet. The following steps will help you do that.

First off, you need to connect an Ethernet cable from the back of your console to your router. Depending on the console you wish to connect, you may need to get a LAN adapter for it. For example, the LAN adapter uses USB ports with the Wii.

Ethernet adapters are built into most of the newer consoles (PS2 slim, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Play Station 3). Once you have finished with all the cable connections, it’s time for configuring your settings. This will vary according to your particular game console.

Configure the network settings based upon what console you have. With the PlayStation 2 you first insert the included installation disc and follow the onscreen instructions to configure the network. Use DHCP for the IP address, this allows the console to automatically receive an IP address.

If you have an Xbox, you first start the console without a game. Select “Xbox Live”, and then select “Advanced.” Make sure to set both the IP Addresses and DNS to automatic.

For an Xbox 360, first go to “System Settings,” and then “Network Settings” and “Configure Network.” Follow the on-screen instructions from there. With a PlayStation 3, start by going to “Settings”, and then “Network Settings,” select “Custom” and follow the on-screen directions from there.

For a Wii, click on “Wii settings”, and then “Wii System Settings.” Select “Internet”, and then “Connection Settings.” Continue following the on-screen instructions.

So, your Ethernet cables are all connected to your router. Your system is now configured so it will connect to the Internet. Now all that is left is to have some fun! Let the fun begin!
