Mom’s Porcelain Serving Trays Platters

When I was a child it seemed that summer came upon us, quicker than a raging, forest fire. We had been tired of being cooped up all winter, and once we had gotten our gardens planted, we were ready to have large bonfires, and great cookouts with family and friends. My mother’s gorgeous, ceramic serving trays platters were all the talk of the celebrating.

I was raised on a farm where long hours working, as a family, were greatly respected. We were not in the least bit wealthy but, we were thankful for what we had. We woke before the sun came up, and the chores were plentiful on that farm. Chickens, pigs, cows, horses, and many other animals had to be fed, stalls had to be cleaned, and gardens had to be hoed, in order for us to survive.

Momma’s trays held the attention of everyone. All three were made of glass manipulated by a hand that knew exactly what it was doing. The pigments which were chosen, and mixed together, seemed to make the dishes look as if they were a moving ocean. They were so gorgeous, most people could not stop talking about them.

I loved those dishes from the very moment I laid eyes on them. I could not wait until the next year, after momma stored them, so that I could view them again. Mom finally decided one day to tell me, how she got these wonderful pieces of art.

Mom was just a young girl, barely into her teenage years, when her mom, my grandmother, became quite sick. The physicians told my grandmother’s family that she did not have very long to live. Before grandmother died, she told my mother that she was to have the final platters she had made before becoming ill. Grandmother was a glass artisan and wanted her daughter to have something special, made by her hands, the set of three plates.

Now, I have grandchildren and when it is my time, I will give this set to my daughter so that she can have a part of our family history to pass to her children. They do not mean anything to others but, to me, no amount of money could buy them.
