T Shirts – The Ultimate Piece Of Clothing?

Undoubtedly, the music industry has had a profound effect on the emerging fashion trends of 2010. The surge of new rave and indie rock bands have made their mark on the design and fashion of t shirts, with numerous effects. In fact, it is hard to believe t shirts were once only sold as a plain white shirt. Now, men’s tops and t shirt come in a variety of vibrant colors and creative designs.

T shirts first emerged in the fashion culture in the 1800′s. However, they were created as an undergarment for men to wear under their primary shirt. It was not until the emergence of the new century that Europeans began to popularize the t shirt as outerwear. During World War One, American soldiers observed the soft, Egyptian cotton shirt worn by Europeans. The t shirt quickly spread to the United States, especially since soldiers donned heavy wool uniforms at the time.

The United States Navy and Army adopted the use of t shirts as part of the standard uniform by the advent of World War Two. Even though the t shirt was given as underwear, soldiers in warmer climates found another use lightweight shirt, often wearing it without their uniform shirt. As photographs of soldiers wearing t shirts were spread throughout the world, the idea of wearing a t shirt as an outer garment became increasingly acceptable – even popular. It is during this era that contemporary use of the t shirt was born.

T shirts increased in popularity after the end of World War Two, when Hollywood stars like Marlon Brando, John Wayne, and James Dean frequently wore them on both in movies and in regular life. As time passed, t shirts continue to be revolutionized. As a sign of the times, the 1960′s brought about tie-dyed t shirts and screen printed designs, in addition to the hugely popular Ringer t shirts. Black concert t shirts emerged in the 1970′s, as a way for rock fans everywhere to showcase their love for their favorite band by wearing the name or logo set against a dark background.

T shirt creativity did not stop there. The last two decades of the twentieth century saw the emergence of slogan t shirts. Slogans like “I’m with stupid” or “Frankie says Relax” were pervasive on t shirts, the latter of which also received inspiration from a musical band – Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Slogan tees became so pervasive, however, that trend setters began “personal branding” for t shirts. During the first decade of the twenty first century, this fashion statement took off with amazing success.

The t shirt craze is not expected to end anytime soon. In fact, with t shirt websites and in-store retailers increasingly allowing customers to effortlessly create their own designs, the popularity is only mounting. The options have in fact grown towards infinity, with the number of bold patterns and bright colors now available for t shirts. There is one thing for certain with the future of t shirt design – it will only expand to become bolder and more adventurous to suit the appetite of the every-growing t shirt culture.
